The announcement of Disney+

You’ve probably heard, saw or already downloaded the new streaming service called: Disney+. Walt Disney, one of the greatest and biggest media company of the world, is publishing content on their own media streaming service and therefore competing against services as Netflix, HBO Now and Amazon Prime. How are they going to infiltrate this market and what will happen?

Launch of Disney plus

Disney+ will officially launch on November 12 in the US, Canada and the Netherlands. Whereas the Netherlands can experience the pilot program that went live last week. Australia and New Zealand get the service on November 19. The mass media company has a massive library of Disney films and TV shows, and the studio will be supporting those with new original programming based on its biggest properties, such as Star Wars and Marvel. For example, real-life movie of Lady and the tramp will be a Disney+ exclusive as this movie won’t be shown in theaters. Unlike previous Disney films as the Lion King and Aladdin which were launched in the theaters with a lot of success.

Experts have different opinions about the new streaming platform. Disney is not going to ‘kill’ Netflix by stealing their subscribers. Although they may give it a chronic illness. However, Disney hasn’t really kicked off its Disney+ launch campaign properly yet. Disney+ Marketing Chief, Joe Earley, spoke about promoting the Disney+ Originals will be one of the major ways Disney advertises the new platform, especially High School Musical: The Musical and Star Wars: The Mandalorian. “Originals are a very important as differentiator in the marketplace”.

Disney+ will cost around $6,99 a month or $69.99 per year in the US. This is half the price of HBO Now and Netflix, which costs around $16 for a monthly subscription. The streaming device will be available on all Apple devices, Google (android) devices, Microsoft Xbox One, PS4 and Roku

    1. Great to hear that you will discuss the future of streaming. I do not know if the business model for streaming will be a part of your article but I am curious about it. For subscribers, it gets really annoying to have an account and of coourse payment for each platform. Do you think there will be a merge or a change in the payment models?

      1. Hi Cagri,
Thank you for challenging us! We’re interested as well, this is why we will included your question in the article of streaming services.

As many online forms show that consumers are getting annoyed by the amount of different streaming services and their ranges of films and series. We don’t believe that the streaming services will merge or share subscriptions or at least for the upcoming 5 years. We do belief that this is an opportunity for tv/internet providers to come up with the solution. By creating packages with different kind of streaming platforms.
Stay tuned for a more detailed answer this week!
